Card Declined? Do This
Foreign cards fail at random terminals in Korea. It's the machine, not you. Here's the 60 second fix.

Switch the method
If tap failed, insert the chip. If chip failed, ask the staff to swipe. One of the three usually works.
Try your other card
Always carry two cards from different networks. Visa and Mastercard have the widest acceptance in Korea.
Offer cash or T-money
Say the phrase below, then pay cash. Convenience stores also accept T-money card balance for payment.
Need cash? Find a global ATM
Use ATMs at major banks (KB, Shinhan, Woori, Hana) or airport ATMs. Look for a Global sign, switch to English, and use the card with the Plus or Cirrus logo on the back.

Where foreign cards usually fail
- Unmanned kiosks (self serve cafes, photo booths, some fast food screens)
- Korean delivery and shopping apps. Most need a Korean card, this is the platform, not your card
- Small local shops with older terminals
- Some intercity bus ticket machines. Use the staffed counter instead
Prevent the next one
- Tell your bank you're in Korea before you fly, declined foreign transactions get flagged as fraud
- Keep 30,000 to 50,000 won in cash as a backup
- Keep a topped up T-money card, it pays at every convenience store
- A prepaid Korean won card (like WOWPASS, sold at airport and station machines) works like a local card at most terminals
