Settle In Korea: The Right Order

ARC, bank, phone. Do them in this order and each step unlocks the next. Do them backwards and you hit walls.

Week 1: tourist mode setup

Prepaid SIM or eSIMBuy at the airport or a convenience store with just your passport. This gives you a Korean number for reservations.
T-money cardAny convenience store, 2,500 to 4,000 won. See the T-money guide.
Naver Map in EnglishSet it up before you need it. See the Naver Map guide.
Cash bufferKeep 50,000 to 100,000 won in cash while your cards prove themselves.

Book online firstReserve a visit at hikorea.go.kr. Walk ins are usually turned away at busy offices.
Prepare documentsPassport, one passport photo (3.5 x 4.5 cm), application form, proof of residence, fee around 30,000 won. Your visa type may need extras, check HiKorea for your case.
Go to your immigration officeThe office is assigned by where you live, not where is closest. Check yours on HiKorea.
Wait for the cardUsually 3 to 6 weeks. You can choose delivery by post for a small fee.

Bank accountBring ARC + passport to KB, Shinhan, Woori, or Hana. Some branches also ask for proof of employment or enrollment. Big branches near universities handle foreigners daily.
Postpaid phone planWith ARC + a Korean bank account you can move from prepaid to a proper plan, cheaper data, and your number stays usable for every app.
Health insurance checkStaying 6 months or more? You are enrolled in National Health Insurance (NHIS) automatically and billed monthly. Employees are covered through work.
Now the fun apps workKorean cards and a verified phone number unlock delivery apps, KakaoT payments, and online shopping.
